Our youngest player

Someone has been practicing I think..
A new player to the game who seems very keen..He has mastered the basics very quickly and while playing him this week noticed that he is starting to use some strategy in his game. Building a nice 5 prime in his home board, then putting me on the bar for several throws. And he's only nine....

A good evening at the Firebrand this Thursday. Several family members turned up as well as one regular
player from the Pint & Post evenings.

You have to keep your strength up while playing. A selection of nibbles helps..

End of year League..

This week I have been in touch with League organisers in Bristol and London with a view to blatantly  ripping off their league format.
Luckily for me they were very helpful and more than willing to let me copy/paste and generally steal their stuff.
So I have sprung into action and started making a League page for the website. I have also signed up to a site that makes displaying results, players etc easier.
Thinking that it will take me a day or two to sort all this out I have penciled in the start date as 1st August 2015 running for three months.
Not many players are needed to start a league. Which is a bonus really because we don't have many.

Next Lansongammon Backgammon meet will be this Thursday (25th June) at  Firebrand
Why not come along for a game or two. If you can't play, come anyway and we will teach you.

Flyers, Backgammon and a video

Well the flyers have arrived from vistaprint. and I'm very pleased with the results.
I have designed them so that they contain all the relevant contact details, Facebook, Twitter, email etc but no venue details.
That way I can add time and place details with a sticker printed at home inserted into a gap left in the center of the flier.
This seems to work well and I have made some up to place tomorrow in our alternate venue.
Business cards are also fairly basic with just main social media contact details as well as email and phone number.
I have 100 of these to hand out to interested people..I have a feeling that I will not be ordering more any time soon. (Interested people are thin on the ground)

This Thursday was our meeting at firebrand not a great success member wise.. But several games were played and Ale drank.

Warm up

I spent a very enjoyable evening down our local pub "The Pint & Post" giving a friend a Backgammon refresher.
I have convinced him to come along to the Firebrand  tomorrow/Thursday..I'm not sure if he is more interested in the Backgammon or the ale on offer. Whichever, i'm sure it will be a good evening.

I was going to try and get some pictures of tonights games but things being as they are I forgot my camera, and my phone is rubbish at pictures so maybe next time.

Pre meeting warm up.

Well it's come around quick..This Thursday 14th it's Backgammon at the FIREBRAND.
I'm hoping to bring along a friend who hasn't played for years. He's not sure and wavering on the sidelines so we are popping along to our local on Wednesday for a refresher game....And maybe a pint or two..

If I remember to take my camera. (yes I still use an old fashioned camera rather than a phone) I will try to post some pre-meeting warm up pictures.

Second Backgammon at the Firebrand

  
Yesterday was our second meeting at the Firebrand bar. A good evening with four players in total.
 

  
As was mentioned on the night.. Even with only four players we are now the biggest Backgammon club in Cornwall. (Unless you know better).
The next meeting will be on the 14th May at 19:30. If you are interested in learning or just fancy a game please come along.

A reminder that tonight Thursday 30th April is the second Backgammon meeting at the Firebrand..Why not come along and play against a real person...All welcome. Bring a board if you have one..

First meeting..Results..

Well The 16th has been and gone.         What happened??

Well I was a little worried that either

A: Nobody would bother to turn up.....  or
B: Loads of people would appear expecting a slick ready formed club.

In the end we had four people turn up, Myself and the wife account for two. The other two consisted of someone that works for the venue who had changed shifts just to play, and the other had traveled some distance just for a game.
Things are looking up for next time as four more people have shown an interest in coming along.

The venue seems ideal for our purposes and with all participants ordering food and drinks helping to swell the till slightly it's win win all round..

I'm carrying on with the Facebook and Twitter advertising campaign and a poster / flyer blitz is on the cards.  

Next meeting Thursday 30th April 19:30 at the  Firebrand  Don't forget this Wednesday Chess and this Thursday Scrabble.

At the Firebrand bar this Thursday there will be Backgammon as you may have guessed from this Blogg.

Added Twitter feed.

I have been experimenting this afternoon with the Blogg layout.
It has stayed basically the same with the addition of a nice new Twitter feed window on the right of the page.
If you are on Twitter you can now follow us by clicking the "Follow" button (The clue is in the name) on this page.
I am trying hard to get people interested in coming along to the club on 16th April so a follow and retweet of one of my blogg posts would be great. And will spread the word..

Backgammon Boards

Well it's not long now until our first event. I have been looking at buying some boards for the big day. E-Bay has been studied to within an inch of its life.
But I have come to the conclusion that I can buy a nice new board from amazon for about the same price as a second hand board from ebay and of about the same quality.

So Debit card in hand I ordered just one board to check out what you get for your money.

                                                   This is the result..And it arrived quickly too.

The case itself was a little disappointing with poorly finished corners that were just not up to scratch.
However the important playing surface and counters etc are great. So for the money, I am very happy and will be ordering another.

These will be club boards and liable to some damage or spillages etc so I'm not going to spend a fortune.

Very happy with my purchase.

Also I joined a Facebook group today.
The Brighton Backgammon club. Not because I am lightly to be going to Brighton, but just to ask them about  starting a new club.
I was given some good advice that I shall be following up on during the Easter holidays.

I'm hoping to set up a Facebook page today for the Launceston club. It seems strange to be posting here and on twitter then soon on Facebook when we haven't had our first meeting yet.
But it's all good advertising..If people don't know about the club I suppose I cant moan if nobody turns up.

First get together will be Thursday 16th April at the firebrand Launceston.

Although I intend to be playing some Backgammon on the day, I'm thinking that the first meeting will be more of an indicator of who is interested in coming along to future meetings. Mainly to give me a guide of just how many Backgammon sets will be needed at meetings.

If you are intending to come and you have a set, feel free to bring it along to play with.

Hoping to see you there......It would be great if you could post a comment below if you are intending to come. Just so that I have an idea of numbers.....

There will be chess too

It's been a day or two since I posted here. Mainly because we are still counting down to our first meeting on the 16th April and there is not much to tell yet.

If you are interested in chess there will now be a weekly chess club meeting at the Firebrand bar starting on the 15th April. See advert above for details.

If you can make it to our first Backgammon meeting all are welcome whatever level of play you are at.. Beginner to Pro. Or just pop along for a chat and a drink..
