Happy new year

This Wednesdays meeting on the 30th Dec will be a short meeting due to the pubs Christmas quiz night.
We will be playing for only an hour from 19:30--20:30.

I have loaded a tournament page to the website mainly for our end of month mini tournaments. It also contains a link to the Challonge website where you can view past results.

Starting in January I am going to try to reinstate the Lansongammon league. The web page is now back up and running with a link to the League Republic website.
Everything starts on 1st January with the first season finishing on 25th March. Pop along to the website and take a look. HERE

And last but not least  HAPPY NEW YEAR

Thursday 24 December 2015

End of year tourny

A very good evening had by all last night down at the Pint & Post.

For the end of the year, just before Christmas meeting we had a mini tournament.
It was the ideal time as a few more people were able to come due to the school holidays. (No bedtime and mothers not stressed)

We were limited on time so played 3 point games finishing right on time just before our usual stagger home time.  All the results have now been uploaded to the UKBGF website for all to see.

After several good games the winner of the first Lansongammon tourny was Lynne Norris. Well played Lynne.

The next mini tournament will be held on the last Wednesday in January.. See you there...

Thursday 17 December 2015

End of year update.

The next meeting at the Pint & Post will be this Wednesday 23rd Dec from 19:30.

We should have a few more members attending this meeting so I'm hoping that we can play a 3 or 5 point  tournament to add some results our UKBGF rating page. Due to illness in the ranks, this hasn't been possible yet.

Starting in 2016 I am thinking that It would be a good idea to hold a regular tournament on the 3rd or 4th Wednesday of each month. Results also being added to the UKBGF page and to our websites hall of fame. (yet to be created)

members
Club membership has been very hit and miss to say the least. We have had people turn up never to be seen again. People who come along regularly and then just stop coming (was it something I said?)
And a couple of people who have come along only to be taken ill. (will let them off)
We still have a regular core membership who come every week but It's strange that even with advertising etc players are thin on the ground. Ha Ho Onwards and upwards..

We have several things planned in the new year to add benefits for members (watch this space) as well as more advertising ideas.

If you want to come along for a game or two just turn up and say "HI" No charges to join or play.  Free parking and the Pint & Post does great food and drink.

Note the NEW featured post top right.
This is a new Blogger feature to highlight posts that might just disappear off the bottom of the page as new ones are added.

Fibs.

After the UKBGF announced that there would be a couple of online tournaments next year I thought I had better start using an online gaming program that is lightly to be used by the other players.
After an e-mail to the tournament director for some advice I settled on trying FIBS.

To be honest my first choice was going to be Gridgammon, just for the reason that quite a few of the players I follow through a Facebook group seem to use it.
The problem with Gridgammon is that you need to be nominated for membership like an exclusive country club. So this was out, as I don't know anyone personally that uses it.
Back to 3DFIBS.

I selected 3DFIBS to use as a Fibsboard and downloaded it to my PC, and I'm glad I did.
I have had quite a few offline games and a few online games over the last few days and I seem steadily to be getting to grips with the functions available.
I will be Re-blogging about my fibs experience in a few months when I have had more experience of it.

So I'm set to go. Roll on January 2016.

UKBGF Ranking

Since my last post I have been in touch with Ian Tarr of the UKBGF to see if Lansongammon could be added to their rankings table.
A quick reply was received and we are now listed HERE.
There is nothing to see match wise at the moment but I'm hoping to rectify this at the club meeting on Wednesday.

More good news; Two more people have shown an interest in coming along to the Pint & Post this Wednesday, so things are looking up.
More flyers have also been posted around about Launceston as well as an updated flyer in the Pint & Post.

This Wednesday all welcome at the Pint& Post for some relaxed backgammon. No joining fees, no playing fees. just turn up, buy a drink and play.

Monday 16 November 2015

Calendar update.

The UKBGF have just updated their events calendar for 2016.

The UK Open will be held once more at the Ricoh Arena Coventry 20th - 22nd May 2016
I'm hoping to go to this one all being well.

The London Open will be between 27th - 29th August 2016 at the Hippodrome, Leicester Square.
This could be a possible one to attend.

The UK Clubs Championship  will be on  14th August 2016 at the Grosvenor Casino, Didsbury, Manchester.  We will have to get some more members who are prepared to travel for this one.. You never know, anythings possible.

Two of our new Young players.

Last Wednesday at the Pint & Post.

Poppy (6) and Reuben (10) get a Backgammon lesson from Lynne (21+)

Reuben has been playing for several months now and Poppy thought that she would like to learn.
I wasn't sure how well she would take to it, but very quickly she was making moves with no help.

Think I will be losing games to them very soon.

Poppy contemplating a tricky move.

Her first games of Backgammon.

Reuben not happy with the checker colours
that he is left with.

Another good evening spent playing Backgammon and sampling the Pint & Posts great food.
Roll on next week.
If you would like to learn how to play or would like a game why not come along next Wednesday. See our WEBSITE for details.

Backgammon for children in need

We are thinking of doing something for Children in need 2015.

The plan is to do something like a 12hr Backgammon marathon or something similar. 24hrs would make for a better event but there isn't anywhere local that we could take over for that amount of time.

So then I'm thinking, how would I work this? Number of games over 12hrs in total as a target, or just constantly playing for 12hrs?
Some thought Is needed but I'm running out of time, there is only 2 weeks to go until the event on the 13th November.

I think a chat to our local pub is needed.. Watch this space for event details.

wise words

So true, can't say I have the skill bit sorted yet.
                                                      But still enjoy my games.

Should be a good turn out tomorrow tonight, Fingers crossed. I know of several people turning up for a game with several eating first, so all good for the Pint & Post.
If you fancy a game why not pop along.. 19:30 start. See our website for directions.

Thursday 15 October 2015

Just another week.

Well another week has gone by..Wednesday night club meeting amounted to me and another regular who comes out to the village from Launceston every week.

So this week I have decided on a couple of things.

1. I have temporarily suspended the league and have taken down the web page for now.
I will reinstate it  when we have more core players...
I thought at one point that we were there, but  maybe    not quite yet.

2. Over the next couple of weeks I am starting a social media and flyer advertising
campaign to try to attract some more members.
                                                          WE WANT YOU...

Anyone reading this who may have some ideas to help rustle up some members please feel free to comment below.

Or if you want to come along, please do, we wont bite.....Honest....

No Backgammon

Just a reminder that there is NO Backgammon at the Pint & Post this Wednesday 30th Sept.

We are on our hollybobs so will be playing Backgammon in the sun. (hopefully)

Fear not however....Backgammon returns to the Pint & Post the following week. See our website for details.
LANSONGAMMON

Do you want to learn how to play this great game of Backgammon?
"YES"  did I hear you say.. Well Come along to our next meeting and I will put my best teaching hat on...It's not that hard to learn, but very addictive. You have been warned..

Backgammon in Wales

We are off on our holidays to Wales very soon so I have been looking for Backgammon clubs in Wales.
After a Google search and a search of the UKBGF site and the BIBA  site.
I have concluded that they don't do Backgammon in Wales. Which is a little disappointing.

If you are reading this and know better please get in touch via the contact page on the web site HERE. We will be in Wales for a week and would love to go along to a local club for a few games...And a pint of course.
We are staying in Porthcawl but can travel. (within reason)

Friday 25 September 2015

All Backgammon Group.

I had a message this week via Facebook messenger from someone who runs the "All Backgammon Group" on Facebook.
They wanted to post some info on my Facebook page, which of course is no problem.
But this got me thinking that I should try to play online via this group. So watch this page for details of how I get on with this group.
I intend on entering events online and I will post my results good or bad here. Lets hope it's more good than bad.

ALL BACKGAMMON GROUP

I have been playing online using the Backgammon Ace App until a few weeks ago..Until they updated the App and I could no longer get it to open on my tablet.. So until they fix the problem of some devises not being supported I will have to look elsewhere.

This weeks Meeting at the Pint & Post wasn't a great success.
Three players in total turned up with one apology from someone who intended on being there but time just got the better of them.

Several people who were eating in the pub showed an interest in our games. One couple saying that they were going home to dig out their board and start to play again...  (Result)

Here's hoping that as the winter approaches more people will venture down to the pub for a game.

UKBGF start up scheme

The UKBGF is pushing it's New and not quite so new club start up scheme again.
Follow the link above for full details..

Lansongammon benefited from one of their grants not to long ago. With the money advertising flyers and business cards were purchased.

These flyers were posted around the Launceston area and the cards used to hand out to interested people and to leave in suitable places for people to find.

Another club board was ordered from Amazon (we now have three in total)  and also a score board from E-bay.

After all that, there is still some cash left over to advertise in our local parish magazine.

This seems like a good plan as most of our members seem to be coming from the immediate area. I'm sure there are loads of people out there who still don't know that we exist.

Next meeting this Wednesday at the Pint & Post, St Giles On the Heath, Launceston.. See our main web page for details.  Lansongammon

Thursday 17 September 2015

Backgammon and Books

Four attended last nights Lansongammon meet at the Pint & Post.
Several good games were played, nibbles kindly provided by the landlady..

.
                     After, followed a new feature...
               "The Lansongammon Book club"
               Books and authors discussed included

All things Sir Terry Pratchett related.

                                Martin Millar
                                        &
                            George RR Martin

I can't imagine that this reading lark will ever take off myself.

Normal Backgammon service will be resumed next Wednesday at the Pint & Post, St Giles-On-The-Heath, Launceston. at 19:30

Coventry Trip to the UKopen

This past weekend we have been in Coventry for the UK Backgammon open2015.

This was my first tournament so I was a little worried about what to expect. You see I have been a member of many different clubs ( non Backgammon) over the years and attended many events that go along with the currant hobby.
I can safely say that most of them were clicky at best and very unwelcoming to non or new members.
So you can see why I was very apprehensive.

Anyways, I need not have worried. We arrived at the Ricoh on Saturday morning and found the event.

Very quickly we were chatting with people.  People that we didn't know. People who were very nice, chatty and welcoming.. RESULT

So far so good...On to the gaming.  I was again worried about my first game against someone new who would undoubtedly be more used to these events.

Again not to worry, all my opponents over the two days were very friendly and I hope to play them again very soon.

All in all a great weekend was had. Games won and more games lost.
But it didn't matter as they were all good games..

I will be on the lookout for the next tournament to travel to..

Sunday 30 August 2015

Busy Bee

I have spent the weekend updating the website to reflect the
new meeting arrangements and venue.

Also contacted several of the websites and organisations that have the club listed to change our details.
So, onwards and upwards. I'm hoping that as the evenings draw in more people will venture out to the nice warm pub for a game and a pint.
Hope to see you there.....

Meeting times HERE

Friday 28 August 2015

Coming soon..

Wednesday nights Backgammon in St Giles went well. Several good games played. I spoke to the landlord and it seems he is more than happy for us to meet there every Wednesday.

It has been a big decision  to leave our Launceston venue but as I have said in a previous post, I can't see the point in traveling into town to play people who live just up the road.
It would not be quite so bad if we had some support from people in Launceston wanting to play or learn but there seems to be no interest.

So as from next Wednesday 2nd September Lansongammon will meet at the Pint & Post St Giles on the Heath. And then every Wednesday..

All welcome.....Why not pop along for a game and a pint.. If you are new to the game we can teach you how to play..

See you there.....

Monday 24 August 2015

Slow going..

Things are slow here at Lansongammon towers.

Last weeks meet was a disaster to say the least. Drove into Launceston to sit for an hour waiting for someone to turn up....Nobody turned up.  :-(

We seem to be getting several people turning up in my local small village pub and very few when the meet is in town.
Also the few who do come in to the Launceston meet are from the alternate venue.(st Giles) or are family or friends.

Maybe a review is on the cards.. I can't see the point in an 8 mile round trip to play against people that live two mins down the road, and if I'm driving I can't drink.

I'm thinking that even with all the advertising etc that has been done people in Launceston just cant be bothered.

I have also been fiddling with the website. I have added a video page to include Youtube videos that are interesting or educational.

Anyway, watch this space for further venue details. www.lansongammon.org

Tuesday 18 August 2015

uk open 2015

Coming up very soon it's the UK open 2015 organised by UKBGF held at the Ricoh Arena Coventry.
I didn't see the need to stay at the venue so have booked a Premiere Inn just up the road for quite a bit less than it would have cost to stay on site.

I'm thinking that this was a very good plan as very close to the hotel is a Gala Bingo to keep Mrs Lansongammon happy after a day of me playing and watching Backgammon also loads of food and shopping outlets to explore.
And it's only a short drive up the motorway to the Ricoh.

I will be taking loads of photos over the weekend to post here..So watch this space.

Last weeks meet at the Pint & Post involved a short match using the cube which went well.
Maybe a few more practice matches with all involved and we are away..
Our youngest member "Reuben" came along and played very well, taking much delight from his wins..
........... Keep up the practice Reuben..............

Sunday 2 August 2015

League page finished..

I have finally finished updating the Lansongammon League page on our website.
The league is running through League republic which can be found on the League page of the website.

It will run over three months starting on 1st August and finishing on 25th November. I am planning a break over Christmas. Starting again on 1st January 2016.

If you want to learn or already know how to play, why not come along to the next meet.. Times and dates can be found on the website HERE
All welcome...

New scoreboard.

This week I have been looking in to buying a score board..I still have some ukbgf money to spend on club bits and pieces so as I'm trying to organise a league and start to play matches on club nights, then a score board would be a good investment.

I started by looking at a well known Backgammon site and found a board for £30.00 plus p&p. Then a quick search of Ebay and I found one on auction with 6 days to run for £15.99 including p&p.
A bid was placed and 6 days later I won. (Result)
So winging it's way to me in the post is the below board.

I will update here when it arrives..
Although the Lansongammon league officially started on 1st August I am a little behind with web page construction etc..
I am hoping to get all up and running by our Thursday meet at the firebrandbar

Saturday 25 July 2015

Our youngest player

Someone has been practicing I think..
A new player to the game who seems very keen..He has mastered the basics very quickly and while playing him this week noticed that he is starting to use some strategy in his game. Building a nice 5 prime in his home board, then putting me on the bar for several throws. And he's only nine....

A good evening at the Firebrand this Thursday. Several family members turned up as well as one regular
player from the Pint & Post evenings.

You have to keep your strength up while playing. A selection of nibbles helps..

Flyers placed today at No8 Cafe in Launceston thanks to Adrian for that..

Next meeting Wednesday 29th July at the Pint & Post.. All welcome...

Saturday 18 July 2015

Pint & Post etc

A good night once again at the Pint & Post.. A new player to the game turned up . She had never played before but picked it up very quickly.
Although there was only a few players available, several good games were played during the evening.

Bad news for me...Due to unforeseen circumstances I will not be attending the "Backgammon in the sun" event that I was so looking forward to in Bristol.
Maybe next year.

Total players coming to weekly meetings are going up all the time.  Not everyone can make it every week but we now have a steady core of players.

Monday 6 July 2015

Backgammon in the sun

Hoping to go along to Bristol in a couple of weeks for this....
Maybe a trip to Ikea on the way back to keep Mrs Lansongammon happy.. (Tiz all good...)

Saturday 4 July 2015

New Member???

Spent this evening teaching my nephew how to play Backgammon. He picked up the basics very easily and seemed to enjoy his games.
Think there could be a new club member in the wings..

Next meeting is at the Firebrand Launceston Thursday 9th 19:30--21:30

Thursday 2 July 2015

Pint & Post results for yesterday

Arrived down at the Pint & Post and just one person was there drinking. After a short chat it was decided that I would have a go at teaching him how to play.
One game later and he had picked up the game with little problem. (Maybe a new member in the wings. )

About one and a half pints later and another player arrived. He was the only other player to turn up all evening.. Not that it mattered. Gaming juice was consumed and a lot of Backgammon was played.
All together a good evening.

On the League front I have completed the relevant page on the website. Although "hidden" at the moment it will be going live very soon ready for 1st August.

Next meeting will be at the firebrandbar in Launceston on Thursday 9th July. For a 19:30 start.

Wednesday 1 July 2015

Fame

Fame at last...Last week I emailed the Cornish and Devon Post about the fact that we existed and about what the club was doing.
They mailed me back for more details and here is the result. Page 9 of today's C&D.

Free advertising for the club and hopefully some new members may come along too.

Very late, but don't forget tonights meeting at The Pint & Post 19:30--21:30

Friday 26 June 2015

Yesterday...

A good set of games yesterday at the Firebrand. Although we don't seem to have a large number of members coming along to meetings regularly. We do have several members coming along for a game when they can.
Work etc getting in the way of regular attendance.
This is why I am very keen to set up a league for members to participate in as regular attendance is not nesessary.
All is going well at the moment and set to start August 1st. I will be asking for participants in the near future.

I have added a couple of polls to the Forum. Why not go along and tick a box.. Or if you are feeling daring why not comment on a thread or start your own.

Wednesday 24 June 2015

NEW Forum

Just added to the website  HERE is a nice new Forum..
So if you want to chat all things Backgammon this is the place to be. Don't be shy. Come along for a chat. You don't need to be a member of our Lansongammon group. You don't even need to live in Cornwall.
Come to think of it you don't need to be in the UK.

Start a thread or add to an existing thread.  Chat... Blots, Primes, Boards, Backgames, Dice, Tournaments, Strategy, Clubs, websites, Players, venues  just anything Backgammon.

End of year League..

This week I have been in touch with League organisers in Bristol and London with a view to blatantly  ripping off their league format.
Luckily for me they were very helpful and more than willing to let me copy/paste and generally steal their stuff.
So I have sprung into action and started making a League page for the website. I have also signed up to a site that makes displaying results, players etc easier.
Thinking that it will take me a day or two to sort all this out I have penciled in the start date as 1st August 2015 running for three months.
Not many players are needed to start a league. Which is a bonus really because we don't have many.

Next Lansongammon Backgammon meet will be this Thursday (25th June) at  Firebrand
Why not come along for a game or two. If you can't play, come anyway and we will teach you.
All welcome..

Thursday 18 June 2015

Day after the night before.

It's the day after our first meeting at the extra venue..(The Pint & Post, St Giles.)

I placed a flyer in the pub only a few days before the meeting so wasn't sure if anyone would show up.

HOWEVER.

When I arrived someone was sitting at a table ready for a game. (Result) After a quick chat and introductions some liquid gaming juice was purchased and we were off.

One game down and an old friend turned up for a game. While he was playing our new member more liquid gaming juice was purchased and some lovely free nibbles were put on our tables by the landlord.
Several games later and we had another new arrival.
She had never played before, so after a quick introduction she was off.
It's hard to gauge what new players to the game are thinking but I think she enjoyed her brief Backgammon experience.
Hoping to see our two new members again.   If not at the firebrand next week then at the "Pint & Post"   would be great.
I went  into the pub this afternoon to update our poster with a sticker showing upcoming dates. The landlady said that she had had quite a bit of interest the previous week one local saying that they may come along in the future. The event is also going to be added to their whats on Facebook page.

So all good  so far..

Flickr Group

I have set up a group on FLICKR  for members to upload pictures of interest. There is also a discussion section associated with the page.
Feel free to take a look and join us...You don't need to be a lansongammon member to join. Just an interest in Backgammon would be a good start.

Backgammon Ace

After noticing that the UKBGF seem to be involved with the App below I decided to download it to my tablet.
As I have a fairly old device I was concerned about the amount of memory that it was going to take but decided to go ahead anyway. After all it's no problem to delete.

The first reviews that you come across on the Google play store are not good. They moan about cheating by the App.  But after playing for what I will admit is a short time I am loving this App.
I can't see what other reviewers are saying about cheating. I'm just not having a problem and all seems good.

A reviewer has a point when they point out that it's probably just sour grapes at losing.

One reviewer also complains about the background music being annoying...Here's a thought....
"Turn it off in settings "
At present I can't complain and have deleted my old Backgammon App in favour of this one.

        Loving the graphics.

Friday 12 June 2015

New UKBGF Member.

Late night Blogg post...I have just joined the UKBGF as a basic member. I was feeling a little guilty that I have just received a grant from them and I am not a member.

So today I joined..  (With my own money I might add)

Grant money spent so far amounts to about £36.00 for flyers and business cards via Vistaprint.

Tomorrow, time permitting I am planning on looking in to advertising in two of our local quarterly mags. So It's being spent slowly but surely...

Flyers, Backgammon and a video

Well the flyers have arrived from vistaprint. and I'm very pleased with the results.
I have designed them so that they contain all the relevant contact details, Facebook, Twitter, email etc but no venue details.
That way I can add time and place details with a sticker printed at home inserted into a gap left in the center of the flier.
This seems to work well and I have made some up to place tomorrow in our alternate venue.
Business cards are also fairly basic with just main social media contact details as well as email and phone number.
I have 100 of these to hand out to interested people..I have a feeling that I will not be ordering more any time soon. (Interested people are thin on the ground)

This Thursday was our meeting at firebrand not a great success member wise.. But several games were played and Ale drank.
My opponent made a short video that was posted on Twitter that evening.  See the results below...

Thursday 11 June 2015

Pint & Post st Giles..

I have now set up a website HERE. Feel free to pop over and take a look.
At present its still very much a work in progress but its getting there.

I have the main pages up and running together with a page link back to this Blogg.
Happy days.

Next week a new location..  We will be meeting at The Pint & Post, St Giles-On-The-Heath, PL15 9SA.
Wednesday 17th June 19:30 - 21:30
Please note the day change for this location.

This runs alongside our firebrand meeting on the alternate week. so nothing changed there.

All welcome. If you have always wanted to learn why not come along for a pint and a game.

For all up coming dates please see the meetings page on our new website.

Wednesday 10 June 2015

UKBGF Grant.

Well that was an interesting week.
Earlier in the week I noticed that the UK Backgammon Federation had started to roll out a new grant scheme for new start ups or clubs that had only just come into being.
I e-mailed them straight away and received a return that evening asking for a rough breakdown of what I would spend the grant on.
Since I have already purchased several boards myself to help start the club I would be spending the bulk of it on advertising via our local newspaper and whats on magazines, flyers and business cards etc.
The main reason for concentrating on this area is that I have advertised via all the usual social media outlets as well as many local whats-on sites with very little success.
I feel that there are many people out there who would like a game but maybe just don't have access to a computer or who just don't use it for social media etc.
Anyway, long story short they seemed happy with my proposal so a bank transfer was received a few days later.
They have also allocated me a UKBGF clubs adviser in case I need any advise on running our group.

If anyone from the UKBGF is reading this, many many thanks for the help as I think it is going to make a great deal of a difference to who knows about us.
Onwards and upwards....

So,

It's taken me several days to get the enthusiasm to write this post.
Last Thursday I took a friend along  to our fortnightly meet at the Firebrand.
We ordered a pint and played for about an hour before deciding to call it a day..Nobody turned up...
After weeks of advertising via Facebook, Firebrand, Twitter, This blogg, Wozzon, Pirate FM , UKBGF, BIBA , Launceston 2020  and word of mouth the result is that nobody could be arsed to drag themselves away from Eastenders for the evening.

In total, since I began five people have come along.
1 player that had traveled  about 14 miles to be there.( Thanks for making the effort)
The rest were all associated with Firebrand, so had inside knowledge and were coming along to make up the numbers.
Is it worth it I'm thinking..
Well I am going to continue with the Launceston meeting every two weeks  but I'm thinking that I may try a different tack on the alternate week.
I am going to pick a suitable pub and advertise that I will be there for a game if anyone wants to pop along. That way it makes it more interesting for me as well as the added possibility that someone local to the pub may come along.

Watch this blogg for details.
